Interview
Skills That Get The Job
Once
you get the interview, you have a chance to stand out. On the other
hand, if you blow it you may not get an interview with that employer
again and most likely won't be offered any new employment opportunity.
Follow
our tips to a successful interview.
- One Word-Attitude
Your attitude toward the employer and toward the job is your key
to standing out. Even if your experience or skills are lacking,
if you have a can-do attitude, an employer will be more likely
to perceive you as a good fit for his/her company.
- Practice
Like with any skill, interviewing well takes practice. Take every
interview you are offered even those you don't think you want.
Every interview is an opportunity for practice and you never know
what other job opportunity could come up. Another option is to
get more structured guidance. Workforce Dynamics will perform
a mock interview with you, providing an assessment of your skills
and suggestions for improvement. Contact: our Career Management
Department for more information.
- Research
Find out everything you can about the company before going to
the interview. In particular, find out what matters most to them
in their work. They will want to know what you have to offer them,
not what you can offer the entire field.
- Anticipate
Questions
Chances are, with common sense, you can consider many of the questions
you will be asked before the employer even asks them. They will
surely want to know your credentials, experience, and your strengths
and weaknesses as they pertain to the company's goals. Brainstorm
an exhaustive list of questions and come up with thoughtful answers.
And, have a few questions of your own to ask the employer to show
you take the match of their company and your career seriously.
(Don't ask about salary and benefits, as the employer will introduce
these when appropriate)
- Have a Mental
Storehouse of Examples
For every question the employers ask they want to hear specific
examples. Brainstorm two or three examples each of your strengths,
special skills, times you problem-solved, etc.
- Dress for Success
Not for the kill. Don't try to look sexy or trendy. You want to
appear business-like and neat.
- Eye Contact:,
etc.
Eye contact is essential in showing that you are interested, confident,
and listening. Think, too, about your body posture and facial
expressions. The employer will consider these as clues to what's
going on inside. Most importantly, smile!
- Know Your Angle
Everyone the employer interviews will have credentials and experience.
What makes you unique? Be aware of personal areas of skill or
qualities that make you an exceptional candidate.
