How To Use The WWW To Find a Job

The World Wide Web is packed full with opportunities for job seekers, but the amount of information can seem overwhelming. Here are some tips to make surfing for jobs a breeze.

Go to the job databases.
Databases have huge collections of information about careers, and they have hundreds of thousands of jobs for you to look through. Try one of these popular databases.

Post your resume on job banks.
Many of the job databases, such as those listed above, can include your resume in a bank for employers to look at. You can either upload your resume to these sites or copy and past it into a provided field. The web sites give you directions on how to do this. If you do post your resume, consider that:

  • your resume not be going to the employers you would choose
  • you have to remember to keep your resume up-to-date
  • the job bank may not be a place at which the employers you want are looking

Go to specific job boards.
Already know where you would like to work? Go to that company's web site and check out their employment offerings. Organizations, businesses and universities are some examples of employers who list jobs on their web sites. A few tips for job boards:

  • Employment offerings are constantly updated so be sure to check back frequently.
  • Make sure you read the advertisements carefully. You don't want to just sling your resumes at the company. You want to apply for jobs both for which you are qualified for and for which you intend to really work.

Look at local media.
The Internet gives you access to classified listings all over the world. The following sites have links to worldwide newspapers and their job listings:

Send your resume through e-mail.
This system for sending your resume and cover letter is rapidly becoming the system of choice for many employers. Plus, it saves you postage! Be sure to read about formatting your resume for the WWW if you intend to send your resume this way.

Format your resume for use on the WWW.
Unlike when you send your resume through snail mail or deliver it by hand, you will not be able to trust that your fancy formatting and fonts will translate on the Web. The safest way to make sure that your resume is received unscrambles is to do one of the following:

  • Save your resume in Rich Text Format, which means simple formatting that can be read by multiple systems. You can use bold, Italics, etc., and you'll be rest assured that the employer can see it.
  • Save your resume in ASCII, which is a fancy way of saying, "no formatting." You will not be able to use bold, italics, etc.
  • Check to see if you and your potential employer share formatting. Chances are, you and your potential employer both have Word, for example. In that case, send your resume as a Word attachment. All your formatting will transfer exactly as it appears on your computer.
